The Delta variant of the new coronavirus makes up 90% of the virus detection tests carried out in Mexico City, the capital’s Health Secretariat reported on Friday.
“As we had pointed out at other times, there is already over 90 percent predominance of the sequenced tests, which are not all, it is an estimate of the distribution in the city,” explained the Secretary of Health of the capital, Oliva López.
The official said that there are also other variants of the virus that are permanently monitored, although they do not have the same predominance as the Delta, which in the capital displaced the Alpha, “which was held for two or three months, along with the Gamma variant, which was responsible for the wave (of infections) in January”.
“This third wave is not even remotely similar, although there is a significant rate of infection, especially in the weeks prior to the two or the previous ones,” he said.
According to the latest health records, Mexico City accumulates so far 804,298 infections of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19), of which 46,127 have died.
Specialists from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) warned this week that in the last eight weeks the positive cases of the Delta variant doubled in Mexico, going from 31 to 67 percent.
