Explosion in Benito Juárez building leaves 22 injured

This Monday, an explosion was registered inside an apartment building located on Coyoacán Avenue between Amores and Universidad Avenue, in the Del Valle neighborhood in Benito Juárez, Mexico City.

According to Miryam Urzúa, head of Civil Protection, it is presumed that the detonation was derived from a “flare” caused by an accumulation of natural gas in apartment 207.

Claudia Sheinbaum, CDMX Head of Government, confirmed a balance of 22 people injured, of which four required transfer to the Rubén Leñero y Xoco medical unit, according to reports from the Secretariat for Comprehensive Risk Management and PC ( SGIRPC ).

Social media users shared images and videos of the shocking accident: a large number of broken glass, damaged structures, and completely collapsed walls can be seen.

According to official reports, all the tenants have been evacuated from the property and no trapped people or human losses are reported. Although unofficial versions assure that there are still people inside the rubble.

Currently, Civil Protection and the Ministry of Works are evaluating the damage to the infrastructure of the “Acacias” building number 1909. Effects on neighboring buildings are ruled out.
